Norwegian Painter, 1845-1932 Norwegian painter. In the 1860s and early 1870s she took lessons in drawing and painting in Christiania (now Oslo) and also travelled extensively in Europe with her sister Agathe, a composer and pianist. She copied works in major museums and took occasional art lessons; she later considered this experience to have been of fundamental importance to her artistic development. Little Red Riding Hood (1872; Oslo, N.G.) is impressive in technique, and the early portrait of her sister, Agathe Backer-Grendahl (1874; Holmestrand, Komm.), shows a refined colour scheme. At the age of nearly 30 Backer decided to train professionally as a painter and in 1874 went to Munich. She was never attached to a particular institution, but the influence of her friend the artist Eilif Peterssen was crucial to her development. Italian painter , 1483-1520 was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, celebrated for the perfection and grace of his paintings and drawings. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he forms the traditional trinity of great masters of that period. Raphael was enormously productive, running an unusually large workshop, and, despite his early death at thirty-seven, a large body of his work remains, especially in the Vatican, whose frescoed Raphael Rooms were the central, and the largest, work of his career, although unfinished at his death. After his early years in Rome, much of his work was designed by him and executed largely by the workshop from his drawings, with considerable loss of quality. He was extremely influential in his lifetime, though outside Rome his work was mostly known from his collaborative printmaking. After his death, the influence of his great rival Michelangelo was more widespread until the 18th and 19th centuries, when Raphael's more serene and harmonious qualities were again regarded as the highest models.
fritz thaulow
född 1847 i Christiania, död 5 november 1906, var en norsk målare. Han är en av de internationellt mest kända norska konstnärerna från 1800-talet. Thaulow fick sin utbildning vid Konstakademin i Köpenhamn 1870 -72, och 1873-75 var han elev till Hans Gude i Karlsruhe. Åren efter detta uppehöll han sig för det mesta i Paris där han fick avgörande intryck från de franska impressionisterna. 1880 vände Thaulow hem som överbevisad naturalist. Tillsammans med Christian Krohg och Erik Werenskiold blev han snabbt en av ledarna i de unge konstnärernas kamp för en rikare och mer vidsynt norsk konstmiljö. Thaulow var bl.a. med på att etablera den första Höstutställningen 1882. 1892 slog han sig ner i Frankrike, och han besökte USA 1898. Från och med samma år bosatte han sig i Paris, där han blev en kändis och blev också känd internationellt, bl.a. genom att bli antagen till den prestigefulla Salongen.
Antonio Carvalho de Silva Porto
(Porto, 11 November 1850 - Porto, 11 June 1893) was a Portuguese naturalist painter. Born in Porto, he studied there under João Antenio Correia and T. Furtado, then continued his studies in Paris and Rome. While in Paris he exhibited his work in the Salon and in the World´s Fair of 1878. In Paris, he studied with his friend João Marques de Oliveira, where they were pupils of Adolphe Yvon and Alexandre Cabanel. They became followers of the naturalist Barbizon School, and brought the new school of painting to Portugal, when they returned in 1879. Silva Porto become one of the most acclaimed naturalist painters of his generation, showing the heritage of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and Charles-François Daubigny. Secondary effects from impressionism can sometimes be found in his paintings.
